Do

“His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.””

John 2:5

Jesus’ first sign (miracle) in John is turning water into wine at the wedding at Cana. There is much to unpack on a deeper level of this story and the foreshadowing of what Jesus is here to do for us. But, as with some things, sometimes the simplest reading is also the most profound.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a simple reading. But it is far from easy. In todays reading Mary is pushing Jesus to step in  and help the party move forward. She tells the servants of the party, “Do whatever He says.” That’s it. Of course the servants at the wedding do as he says and it is the party of the century. No, the party of the millennium! Don’t believe me? How many other parties from 1st century Palestine have you heard about?

Do whatever He says.

Maybe it really is that simple. Again, not easy. But we don’t need to over complexify living on the Jesus Way. A disciples life consists of taking a serious account of how you are currently living and holding that up to Jesus. Where your life is parallel with His—celebrate and maximize. Where it is congruent—amend and modify. All of this, of course, is not your work. But the work of the Holy Spirit in you. So partner with Him. Partner with the Holy Spirit.

And Do Whatever He Says…
